Carl and Jack Cole - World's Biggest Bookstore

World's Biggest Bookstore

In 1980, Jack opened the World's Biggest Bookstore at the site of a former bowling alley. At the time, it was the largest bookstore in the world at 67,000 square feet (6,200 m2). It was located in downtown Toronto on Edward Street. Although the business is owned by Indigo Books and Music, the building is owned by the family of Jack Cole.

On June 20, 2012, Stuart Smith of CBRE Commercial Real Estate Services announced that the lease on the store's building, set to expire at the end of 2013, would not be renewed by Indigo Books and Music. The World's Biggest Bookstore would therefore close.

Famous quotes containing the words world, biggest and/or bookstore:

... I was crying partly because I felt that this was expected of me, partly from genuine repentance, but partly also because of a deeper grief which is peculiar to childhood and not easy to convey: a sense of desolate loneliness and helplessness, of being locked up not only in a hostile world but in a world of good and evil where the rules were such that it was actually not possible for me to keep them.
    George Orwell (1903–1950)

Sometimes I think that the biggest difference between men and women is that more men need to seek out some terrible lurking thing in existence and hurl themselves upon it.... Women know where it lives but they can let it alone.
    Russell Hoban (b. 1925)

I went to the bookstore and God was not there.
Doctor Faustus was baby blue with a Knopf dog
on his spine. He was frayed and threadbare
    with needing.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
