Artistic Adaptations
- In 1956 John Ford directed the film, The Searchers, a drama about a man's search for his niece who was taken captive by Comanche in the west. Starring John Wayne, the film was primarily about him and his search; it was influential because of its multiple psychological layers in the character portrayal.
- Cello-rock band Rasputina parodied captivity narratives in their song "My Captivity by Savages" from their 2004 album Frustration Plantation.
- The song "Cannibal Buffet" from the 2007 album Ooky Spooky by Voltaire is a humorous take on captivity narratives.
- The assimilation of captives into "primitive" societies figures in many modern films, including Avatar and The Last Samurai; such films may well be said to have roots in the genre.

Famous quotes containing the word artistic:
“I think taste is a social concept and not an artistic one. Im willing to show good taste, if I can, in somebody elses living room, but our reading life is too short for a writer to be in any way polite. Since his words enter into anothers brain in silence and intimacy, he should be as honest and explicit as we are with ourselves.”
—John Updike (b. 1932)
