Captivity Narrative - Artistic Adaptations

Artistic Adaptations

  • In 1956 John Ford directed the film, The Searchers, a drama about a man's search for his niece who was taken captive by Comanche in the west. Starring John Wayne, the film was primarily about him and his search; it was influential because of its multiple psychological layers in the character portrayal.
  • Cello-rock band Rasputina parodied captivity narratives in their song "My Captivity by Savages" from their 2004 album Frustration Plantation.
  • The song "Cannibal Buffet" from the 2007 album Ooky Spooky by Voltaire is a humorous take on captivity narratives.
  • The assimilation of captives into "primitive" societies figures in many modern films, including Avatar and The Last Samurai; such films may well be said to have roots in the genre.

Famous quotes containing the word artistic:

The true, prescriptive artist strives after artistic truth; the lawless artist, following blind instinct, after an appearance of naturalness. The one leads to the highest peaks of art, the other to its lowest depths.
    Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749–1832)
