Capacitance of Blood Vessels

The capacitance of blood vessels describes the distensibility of blood vessels located within the body; it is inversely related to elasticity. Therefore, the greater the amount of elastic tissue in a blood vessel, the greater the elasticity, and the lower the compliance. This ultimately describes how volume changes in response to a change in pressure within the blood vessel at hand.

Famous quotes containing the words blood and/or vessels:

Dust fanned in scraped puffs from the earth
Between his arms, and blood turned his face inside out,
    To demonstrate its suppleness
Of veins, as he perfected his role.
    James Dickey (b. 1923)

Just as bones, tissues, intestines, and blood vessels are enclosed in a skin that makes it possible to bear the sight of a human being, so the agitations and passions of the soul are wrapped up in vanity: it is the soul’s skin.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
