Canterbury Rugby Football Union - Notable Players

Notable Players

The union has produced countless players for New Zealand's storied national team, the All Blacks. This includes Andrew Mehrtens, who had the record for the most All Black Test points (967 in 70 Tests). Also of note is Justin Marshall who is the second most capped All Black of all time, with 81 Test caps. Both players, arguably the province's greatest inside back pairing of all time, now continue to play professionally, Mehrtens in France and Marshall in the United Kingdom. The current All Blacks backs coach is former Canterbury representative and All Black Wayne Smith.

Famous quotes containing the words notable and/or players:

    a notable prince that was called King John;
    And he ruled England with main and with might,
    For he did great wrong, and maintained little right.
    —Unknown. King John and the Abbot of Canterbury (l. 2–4)

    I do not like football, which I think of as a game in which two tractors approach each other from opposite directions and collide. Besides, I have contempt for a game in which players have to wear so much equipment. Men play basketball in their underwear, which seems just right to me.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
