Observational History

One of the least famous of the brightest stars, Canopus was not visible to the Ancient Greeks and Romans; it was, however, visible to the Ancient Egyptians. It is also referred to by its Arabic name: سهيل (Suhayl), given by Islamic scientists in the 7th Century CE.
