Candy Apple Red in Culture

Airline Colors

  • Virgin Atlantic began using candy apple red on the tails and engine nacelles of their fleet in July 2010.

Automobiles

  • Candy Apple Red was first officially used on a production car by Ford in 1966, but was a bright, non-metallic, red. It was not until 1996, that Chrysler, and GM in 2001, had a similarly named production paint. Interestingly an automotive paint search of Apple shows that historically the name was associated with a Green going back to the early 1930's.
  • Candy apple red is a popular color for car companies to manufacture automobiles in because "candy apple red" colored automobiles sell quickly.
  • The color medium candy apple red, applied with a metallic sheen, is popular among car owners who customize their cars by painting their cars metallic candy apple red. The "Candy Apple Red" metallic finish is produced, not only for cars but for other objects such as electric guitars, by covering a metallic gold undercoat with layers of translucent lacquer tinted candy apple red. (Metallic finishes can also be produced in this way by tinting with other colors such as green, etc.)

Monster Trucks

  • The Avenger Monster Truck use this color in the 2011 Monster Jam World Finals.

Music

  • The song Candy Apple Red Impala was released on a 45 rpm record in 1962 by rock and roll musicians Little E and the Mello-Tone Three ("Little E"'s actual name was Emil O'Conner), although the bright red offered in 1962 on an Impala had a promotional name of Roman Red.
  • Minneapolis post punk trio Husker Du entitled an album "Candy Apple Grey" although there is no such color.
  • Guitar-making giant Fender introduced Candy Apple Red as a custom colour for their Stratocaster and Telecaster range of guitars from 1963. The color quickly became one of Fender's most popular colors after Sunburst and Black. Pink Floyd legend David Gilmour's main instrument of choice from 1984 to 2005 was a 1983 Candy Apple Red Fender American Vintage 57 Stratocaster. The guitar was outfitted with EMG-SA active pickups in 1985 and remains one of the most iconic guitars after Gilmour's own "Black Strat".

Race Car Driving

  • Ralph Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who was born in 1974 and became a NASCAR race car driver, adopted the name Little E, naming himself after the rock and roll musician who released the 45 rpm single Candy Apple Red Impala in 1962.

Famous quotes containing the words candy, apple, red and/or culture:

I’m headed for a land that’s far away
    Beside the crystal fountains.
So come with me, we’ll go and see
    The Big Rock Candy Mountains.
—Unknown. The Big Rock Candy Mountains (l. 5–8)

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Swedish proverb, trans. by Verne Moberg.

What art can paint or gild any object in afterlife with the glow which Nature gives to the first baubles of childhood. St. Peter’s cannot have the magical power over us that the red and gold covers of our first picture-book possessed. How the imagination cleaves to the warm glories of that tinsel even now! What entertainments make every day bright and short for the fine freshman!
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

The local is a shabby thing. There’s nothing worse than bringing us back down to our own little corner, our own territory, the radiant promiscuity of the face to face. A culture which has taken the risk of the universal, must perish by the universal.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)
