Canary (film) - Plot and Structure

Plot and Structure

The non-linear narrative follows the inner workings of the fictional Canary Industries Corporation, a biotechnology outfit that leases organs to patients, on the proviso that they take care of them with a pre-delineated diet and exercise regimen. If the patient fails to do this, the organ will be repossessed. Meanwhile, a television news team, headed by a sexist segment producer and his long-suffering female assistant, chase the story of how the organs are harvested. The agent in charge of harvesting the organs (Carla Pauli) silently stalks her various victims.

The various characters in Canary, including the protagonist, are static, and the dialog is largely conversational, and not meant to move the plot forward. Though the setting is never explicitly stated, it can be inferred that it takes place in the San Francisco Bay Area. The film highlights the diversity of the area, with long, unsubtitled sequences of characters conversing in Russian, Vietnamese and German, as well as English.

Famous quotes containing the words plot and, plot and/or structure:

    Trade and the streets ensnare us,
    Our bodies are weak and worn;
    We plot and corrupt each other,
    And we despoil the unborn.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

    The plot was most interesting. It belonged to no particular age, people, or country, and was perhaps the more delightful on that account, as nobody’s previous information could afford the remotest glimmering of what would ever come of it.
    Charles Dickens (1812–1870)

    If rightly made, a boat would be a sort of amphibious animal, a creature of two elements, related by one half its structure to some swift and shapely fish, and by the other to some strong-winged and graceful bird.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
