Regional Profile
Central Toronto has in recent years leaned well to the political left. From 1993 to 2004, the Liberals held every seat in the former Metro Toronto, in some cases with large margins. The New Democratic Party (NDP) broke through in 2004 when Jack Layton was elected; the NDP won two additional seats in close races in 2006 but lost one in 2008. The Conservatives had no representation in this area until 2011. In 2011, the Liberal vote collapsed under the onslaught of both the Conservatives and the NDP, with the Conservatives taking two uptown ridings, the Liberals retaining two, and the NDP winning the remaining six.
