Department of Public Safety

Since Drexel has a large, urban campus there is always the risk of crime. Drexel's solution to the issue of crime is a three-layer defense: Drexel Police, Philadelphia Police, and Drexel Public Safety (staffed by Allied Barton). Police and Public Safety conduct regular patrols on campus and within a few blocks of campus on foot, bicycle, and police vehicles. In addition to Philadelphia Police, Drexel has its own police force. Drexel Police Officers are armed and have the same powers as the Philadelphia Police. Drexel also has hundreds of constantly monitored cameras around campus linked to an on-site security headquarters. In conjunction with these surveillance cameras, Drexel operates over over fifty emergency call boxes located around campus. Should a student feel endangered, he or she can simply press the button on these boxes, and they will be immediately connected with a security officer. The officer will be able to see the person and speak with the person via camera and phone. An officer will be dispatched to their location, the officer will be there in less than 45 seconds. Students may also request a walking escort 24 hours a day, from or to any location on or around campus. With all these measures in place, Drexel's campus remains a safe area for both students and local residents.

Famous quotes containing the words department of, department, public and/or safety:

... the Department of Justice is committed to asking one central question of everything we do: What is the right thing to do? Now that can produce debate, and I want it to be spirited debate. I want the lawyers of America to be able to call me and tell me: Janet, have you lost your mind?
    Janet Wood Reno (b. 1938)

The African race evidently are made to excel in that department which lies between the sensuousness and the intellectual—what we call the elegant arts. These require rich and abundant animal nature, such as they possess; and if ever they become highly civilised, they will excel in music, dancing and elocution.
    Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811–1896)

[T]he Congregational minister in a neighboring town definitely stated that ‘the same spirit which drove the herd of swine into the sea drove the Baptists into the water, and that they were hurried along by the devil until the rite was performed.’
—For the State of Vermont, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

For hours, in fall days, I watched the ducks cunningly tack and veer and hold the middle of the pond, far from the sportsman;... but what beside safety they got by sailing in the middle of Walden I do not know, unless they love its water for the same reason that I do.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
