Camp Loughridge - History

History

Tulsa's first YWCA camp, then known as Camp Parthenia, began offering summer camps during the 1920s. In 1959, First Presbyterian Church of Tulsa acquired the camp, and changed its name to Camp Loughridge, in memory of the Reverend Robert McGill Loughridge, a pioneer missionary to the Creek Indian Nation. In 1995, Camp Loughridge was chartered as an Oklahoma not-for-profit corporation. This corporation now maintains and operates the 186-acre (0.75 km2) camp with a full-time, year-round staff.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

What is most interesting and valuable in it, however, is not the materials for the history of Pontiac, or Braddock, or the Northwest, which it furnishes; not the annals of the country, but the natural facts, or perennials, which are ever without date. When out of history the truth shall be extracted, it will have shed its dates like withered leaves.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The best history is but like the art of Rembrandt; it casts a vivid light on certain selected causes, on those which were best and greatest; it leaves all the rest in shadow and unseen.
    Walter Bagehot (1826–1877)

A poet’s object is not to tell what actually happened but what could or would happen either probably or inevitably.... For this reason poetry is something more scientific and serious than history, because poetry tends to give general truths while history gives particular facts.
    Aristotle (384–323 B.C.)
