Callaghan Valley - Development History

Development History

The Callaghan Valley is a unique microclimate surrounded by a ringwall of five mountains. When long held right to develop the Valley into an year round ski resort, delayed by political/bureaucratic corruption, it will provide year round skiing on ten square miles of Powder Mountain Icefield. It is the most easily accessible of all the major Coast Mountains icefields by road and a number of heliskiing companies using it on ar regular basis from bases in Whistler.

Powder Mountain Resorts Ltd won three, legal BC Government proposal calls and became the sole proponent to build an international ski resort community in the entire Callaghan Valley through due process in 1986.

The company was derailed through corruption and direct political interference by former disgraced Premier Bill Vander Zalm who tried unsuccessfully, to transfer the project to his friends without any due process, with the assist of a small group of land bureaucrats and a crown lawyer now in private practice.

The former Premier was forced to resign in disgrace. A key senior land bureaucrat involved with VanderZalm's unethical conduct, suddenly resigned from his Government crown land position when an RCMP criminal investigation was launched for the third time, prior to the 2010 Vancouver/Whistler Olympics. New evidence regarding documented conflicts of interests was uncovered.

The RCMP file was suddenly closed 10 days before the Prague Bid selection for the 2010 Winter Olympics to protect the Vancouver/Whistler Bid from scandal. Vancouver/Whistler won the bid.

The land bureaucrats and lawyer involved with derailing the Powder Mountain Resorts Ltd project in the Callaghan Valley were all actively involved with VANOC in key positions alongside a private interest Nordic Operator located in Whistler. It was uncovered that he former crown lawyer received a large legal contract for the Olympic Park Nordic Venue placed in the Callaghan Valley by this group all working on VANOC Committees. The same former crown lawyer received the contract for the the Whistler Sliding Centre Venue. The land bureaucrats and the former crown lawyer were all in serious conflict of interest positions.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler having received millions of dollars of taxpayers grants from the land bureaucrats, opposed the Powder Mountain project, widely accepted, afraid of competition from a resort with far superior conditions. Their narrow view being folly as 'clustering' is a key component for economic viability of ski resorts.

Powder Mountain Resorts Ltd maintains its long held legal position and reportedly holds the evidence in full. It's proponents, a mother and daughter team, Nan and Dianne Hartwick have deep family pioneering roots in B.C. The private company has secured a wide network of good British Columbians who will ensure the company's hard fought rights via due process, are fully reinstated bringing forward a significant, new economic development project for British Columbia from the private sector requiring no government subsidies.
