California State University Police Department

The California State University Police Department (CSUPD) is the police department for the California State University. Although referred to as campus police, or university police, the police officers are duly sworn peace officers of the State of California, as established by section 830.2(c) of the California Penal Code. There are a total of 23 campuses in the California State University system, but only 22 have their own campus police departments. The one exception is the California Maritime Academy, which operates a public safety security department. Each campus's police department is actually quite independent of the other, as each has its own chain of command. Some of the policies are school-wide however. However, when situations arise on a campus that require more police than the individual department can handle, other campus departments can send mutual aid officers to help.

The CSUPD was established pursuant to section 89560 of the California Education Code to meet public safety requirements of the campus community. They have the same responsibilities and powers of arrest as any other peace officer in the State of California. CSUPD's primary jurisdiction is the CSU campuses, including the areas within one mile of the campus borders.

Almost all of the campuses operate a Community Service Officer program, which employs non-sworn students to perform tasks such as building checks and night escorts. Most of the departments also conduct bicycle registrations, "Live Scan" fingerprinting, and lost and found. Additionally, it is possible to have non-moving vehicle citations ("fix-it tickets") signed off at these departments.

In 1990, the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act became federal law. This law requires all universities to compile and publish data describing the reported crimes that occurred on campus. The data for specific campuses can be found on the websites listed at the end of this article.
