California Institute For Regenerative Medicine

The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) was created by California's Proposition 71 (2004), which authorized it to issue $3 billion in grants, funded by bonds, over ten years for embryonic stem cell and other biomedical research. It is claimed to be the world's largest single backer of research in stem cells. However, the U.S. Federal government is the largest sponsor of grant money in the world, although the Dickey Amendment which was passed by Congress in 1995 and signed into law by President Bill Clinton (and later affirmed by President George W. Bush in 2001), restricts the application of federal money to stem cell research for particular uses. CIRM awarded its first grants to train 169 stem cell researchers in April 2006. It funded its first research grants, totaling more than $100 million, in the first quarter of 2007.

Famous quotes containing the words california, institute and/or medicine:

The attraction and superiority of California are in its days. It has better days & more of them, than any other country.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Whenever any form of government shall become destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, & to institute new government, laying it’s foundation on such principles & organising it’s powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety & happiness.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)

In view of the fact that the number of people living too long has risen catastrophically and still continues to rise.... Question: Must we live as long as modern medicine enables us to?... We control our entry into life, it is time we began to control our exit.
    Max Frisch (1911–1991)
