Calgary French and International School - Debate

Debate

The art of debate is an important part of our school culture. Our debate club competes in numerous English and French events throughout the school year. In past years, CFIS students have qualified for both Provincial and National Debate Tournaments.

The idea behind debate is that there are two sides to every issue - the Affirmative and the Negative. The two sides of the debate have different jobs arising from their position with respect to the Resolution, issue or topic. Participants of the Debate Club benefit from developing public speaking, critical thinking, research and teamwork skills. We deal with the challenge of learning to be resourceful thinkers who can synthesize ideas and quickly articulate them.

Famous quotes containing the word debate:

My first debate in high school—”Resolved: Girls are no good”—and I won!
Donald Freed, U.S. screenwriter, and Arnold M. Stone. Robert Altman. Richard Nixon (Philip Baker Hall)

A great deal of unnecessary worry is indulged in by theatregoers trying to understand what Bernard Shaw means. They are not satisfied to listen to a pleasantly written scene in which three or four clever people say clever things, but they need to purse their lips and scowl a little and debate as to whether Shaw meant the lines to be an attack on monogamy as an institution or a plea for manual training in the public school system.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)

Abject flattery and indiscriminate assentation degrade, as much as indiscriminate contradiction and noisy debate disgust. But a modest assertion of one’s own opinion, and a complaisant acquiescence in other people’s, preserve dignity.
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773)
