Calderglen High School

Calderglen High School is a state-run secondary school in the St Leonards area of the Scottish new town East Kilbride, in South Lanarkshire. The complex of buildings is situated on the precipitous bank of the Rotten Calder Water, overlooking a meander named the School Bend. The school derives its name from the Calder glen (gorge) which the river occupies, which is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI). The school has a pupil roll of approximately 2,000, and 130 teachers, making it one of the largest secondary institutions in Europe. The School's houses are named Cameron, Torrance, and Struthers.

The school was established after the merger of Hunter High School and Claremont High School. Calderglen occupies the site of the former Claremont High, and was opened on 18 February 2008, in a new purpose-built building. The campus is shared with Sanderson High School, a special school catering for students with learning difficulties. Mrs Elizabeth White is the school's Acting Head Teacher.

Famous quotes containing the words high and/or school:

And the shuttle never falters, but to draw an encouraging conclusion
From this would be considerable, too odd. Why not just
Breathe in with the courage of each day, recognizing yourself as one
Who must with difficulty get down from high places?
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

Nevertheless, no school can work well for children if parents and teachers do not act in partnership on behalf of the children’s best interests. Parents have every right to understand what is happening to their children at school, and teachers have the responsibility to share that information without prejudicial judgment.... Such communication, which can only be in a child’s interest, is not possible without mutual trust between parent and teacher.
    Dorothy H. Cohen (20th century)
