Calcutta Time

Calcutta time was one of the two time zones established in British India in 1884. It was established during the International Meridian Conference held at Washington, D.C in the United States. It had decided that India has two time zones, which it has providing Calcutta (now Kolkata) would use the 90th meridian east and Bombay (Mumbai) the 75th meridian east. Calcutta time was set at 5 hours, 30 minutes, and 21 seconds in advance of GMT.

Even Indian Standard Time (IST) was adopted on January 1, 1906 because of it had remained its effect. In 1948, Calcutta time was abandoned in favour of IST.

Famous quotes containing the word time:

“A young man in the dark am I
But a wild old man in the light
That can make a cat laugh, or
    Can touch by mother wit
Things hid in their marrow bones
    From time long passed away....”
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
