Cairo International Film Festival

The Cairo International Film Festival (Arabic: مهرجان القاهرة السينمائي الدولي‎) is an annual film festival held in Cairo, Egypt. It was established in 1976 and was the first international film festival held in the Arab world. It has taken place every year since its inception, except for 2011, when it was cancelled due to budget limitations and political instability. The 35th edition is scheduled to take place in November 2012. It is the only international competitive feature film festival recognized by the FIAPF in the Arab world and Africa, as well as the oldest in this category.

Famous quotes containing the words cairo, film and/or festival:

The Cairo conference ... is about a complicated web of education and employment, consumption and poverty, development and health care. It is also about whether governments will follow where women have so clearly led them, toward safe, simple and reliable choices in family planning. While Cairo crackles with conflict, in the homes of the world the orthodoxies have been duly heard, and roundly ignored.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)

The woman’s world ... is shown as a series of limited spaces, with the woman struggling to get free of them. The struggle is what the film is about; what is struggled against is the limited space itself. Consequently, to make its point, the film has to deny itself and suggest it was the struggle that was wrong, not the space.
    Jeanine Basinger (b. 1936)

Sabbath. A weekly festival having its origin in the fact that God made the world in six days and was arrested on the seventh.
    Ambrose Bierce (1842–1914)
