Critical Reception
In 2011, African writer Ikhide R. Ikheloa criticized the prize, suggesting that
- "many writers are skewing their written perspectives to fit what they imagine will sell to the West and the judges of the Caine Prize.. The creation of a prize for "African writing" may have created the unintended effect of breeding writers willing to stereotype Africa for glory.. The mostly lazy, predictable stories that made the 2011 shortlist celebrate orthodoxy and mediocrity."

“I gave a speech in Omaha. After the speech I went to a reception elsewhere in town. A sweet old lady came up to me, put her gloved hand in mine, and said, I hear you spoke here tonight. Oh, it was nothing, I replied modestly. Yes, the little old lady nodded, thats what I heard.”
