BYU Rugby - Rivalry

Rivalry

Each year BYU competes in the Wasatch Cup, an annual rivalry match against the University of Utah. Since BYU and Utah are regularly ranked among the top collegiate rugby teams in the U.S. by American Rugby News and Rugby Magazine, the match is billed as one of the premier rugby rivalries in the United States. Since 2007 the symbol of victory has been a rather large loving-cup style trophy with the match history inscribed in its base.

BYU has won in 2011, 2010, 2009, 2007, 2006, and 2004. The rivalry could have dwindled somewhat between the two teams after BYU beat Utah twice in 2009 for a combined score of 125 to Utahʻs 35. BYU won again on March 6, 2010 by a score of 15-10 in a match televised by KBYUTV. However, Utah won against BYU on March 24, 2010 in a match played at 20,000 seat Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, with a final score of 31-29 (though possession of the cup for the year had already been settled in the March 6th match). The attendance at the March 24th match was reported to have been 4,100 spectators. In 2011, the #2 Cougars once again beat the underpowered #6 Utah team by a score of 40-22.

Famous quotes containing the word rivalry:

Sisters define their rivalry in terms of competition for the gold cup of parental love. It is never perceived as a cup which runneth over, rather a finite vessel from which the more one sister drinks, the less is left for the others.
    Elizabeth Fishel (20th century)

It seems to me that we have to draw the line in sibling rivalry whenever rivalry goes out of bounds into destructive behavior of a physical or verbal kind. The principle needs to be this: Whatever the reasons for your feelings you will have to find civilized solutions.
    Selma H. Fraiberg (20th century)
