The institute was formerly known as Bundelkhand Engineering College. BENCOL is an acronym for Bundelkhand ENgineering COLlege. Hence the term Bencolites refers to the students (current and graduated) of the institute. Though BENCOL was formally changed to BIET (in around 1994-1995), the term Bencolites is still used by alumni.
