Historic and Pilgrimage Centres

A salt-lake (Lonar crater lake) formed due to an impact is one of the main tourist attractions of this region. The crater is believed to be formed by the sheer impact of a meteorite weighing 2 million tones, 60 meters wide, travelling at a speed of 90,000 kilometres per hour. This collision is said to have happened some 52,000 years ago creating a dent in the earth, and is 1830 meters in diameter and 150 meters deep. The crater gets its name from the place where it impacted, Lonar. This crater is the worlds oldest meteorite crater and the only meteorite crater in basaltic rock.

Shegaon, a religious place made famous by the saint Gajanan Maharaj is also in Buldhana district.

Sindkhed Raja,the birthplace of Maa Jijau, mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is also located in Buldhana district.

Famous quotes containing the words historic, pilgrimage and/or centres:

    The historic ascent of humanity, taken as a whole, may be summarized as a succession of victories of consciousness over blind forces—in nature, in society, in man himself.
    Leon Trotsky (1879–1940)

    “Come hither, Son,” I heard Death say;
    “I did not will a grave
    Should end thy pilgrimage today,
    But I, too, am a slave!”
    Thomas Hardy (1840–1928)

    I perceive that in these woods the earliest settlements are, for various reasons, clustering about the lakes, but partly, I think, for the sake of the neighborhood as the oldest clearings. They are forest schools already established,—great centres of light.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
