Bukit Mertajam

Bukit Mertajam is the capital of Central Seberang Perai, Penang, Malaysia. It is commonly known as BM among its locals. It is located nearby Kulim, Kedah.

Bukit Mertajam was ranked 27th most populous area in Malaysia according to the 2010 census. Bukit Mertajam has the highest population in Seberang Perai besides Butterworth. The racial breakdown in Bukit Mertajam is 75% Chinese and 25% for other races. The cost of living and house prices in Bukit Mertajam is not very high compared to Penang island. The town's population has increased from the from 1970 at 28,675 later to 122,044 (1980), and then increased to 165,422 (1990), 235,319 (2000) and again increased to 227,972 (2010).

There has been heavy traffic in Bukit Mertajam especially during peak hours daily. This is because Bukit Mertajam is located very close to the Kulim Hi-Tech Park, Bukit Minyak and Perai Industrial Area, which is the largest in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia.

Bukit Mertajam is also close to the North South Expressway. Most people will also be able to travel along this highway from Bukit Mertajam to Kuala Lumpur.

Most people in Kulim, Kedah also travel to work in this town on a daily basis. Hence, there are heavy traffic along the road between Kulim and Bukit Mertajam.
