Acting and Musical Theatre
Along with the many changes made by Williams in 2008, a foray into acting became part of his long list of endeavors. Williams made his film debut in the 2008 Charlie Murphy comedy The Hustle, which was released to home video in 2011. In September 2008, he played the role of James "Thunder" Early in a San Diego production of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls. Later in 2008 and early 2009, Williams played the character of Rolin in Princess & The Black Eyed Pea at the Lyceum Theater in San Diego. In 2011, he played the starring role in San Diego Repertory Theatre's production of The Who's Tommy, becoming the first reported African American male to do so. His performance earned him the Craig Noel Award for Best Male Lead Performance in a Musical.

Famous quotes containing the words acting, musical and/or theatre:
“I have no acting technique.... I act instinctively. Thats why I cant play any role that isnt based on something in my life.”
—Ethel Waters (19001977)
“Syncopations are no indication of light or trashy music, and to shy bricks at hateful ragtime no longer passes for musical culture.”
—Scott Joplin (18681917)
“Glorious bouquets and storms of applause ... are the trimmings which every artist naturally enjoys. But to move an audience in such a role, to hear in the applause that unmistakable note which breaks through good theatre manners and comes from the heart, is to feel that you have won through to life itself. Such pleasure does not vanish with the fall of the curtain, but becomes part of ones own life.”
—Dame Alice Markova (b. 1910)
