The British Science Fiction Association was founded in 1958 by a group of British science fiction fans, authors, publishers and booksellers, in order to encourage science fiction in every form. It is an open membership organisation costing £26 per year for UK residents and £18 for the unwaged. The first president of the BSFA was Brian Aldiss. Stephen Baxter is Vice President. The BSFA currently publishes three magazines, sent to all members:
- Vector - This is the reviews and criticism journal of the BSFA. Published six times a year.
- Matrix - This is the newsletter of the BSFA. It also publishes media reviews. Published six times a year.
- Focus - This is the BSFA's writers magazine. Published twice a year.
The BSFA Awards are presented annually by the British Science Fiction Association, based on a vote of BSFA members and members of the British national SF convention (Eastercon). BSFA members also sit on the panel of the Arthur C. Clarke Award.

Famous quotes containing the words british, science, fiction and/or association:
“The British are a self-distrustful, diffident people, agreeing with alacrity that they are neither successful nor clever, and only modestly claiming that they have a keener sense of humour, more robust common sense, and greater staying power as a nation than all the rest of the world put together.”
—Quoted in Fourth Leaders from the Times (1950)
“The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking.”
—Albert Einstein (18791955)
“We can never safely exceed the actual facts in our narratives. Of pure invention, such as some suppose, there is no instance. To write a true work of fiction even is only to take leisure and liberty to describe some things more exactly as they are.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“They that have grown old in a single state are generally found to be morose, fretful and captious; tenacious of their own practices and maxims; soon offended by contradiction or negligence; and impatient of any association but with those that will watch their nod, and submit themselves to unlimited authority.”
—Samuel Johnson (17091784)
