Brisbane Water - Environment

Environment

Brisbane Water is mostly shallow and tidal. The inlet narrows at "The Rip" which has a rapid tidal current. The waterways are renowned for their rich aquatic life; sea weeds, mangroves, oysters, sharks and rays, as well as good populations of fish are present in the waters.

Some 2277 ha of Brisbane Water is classified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area because it has an isolated population of up to 10 breeding pairs of Bush Stone-curlews and sometimes supports flocks of the endangered Regent Honeyeater and Swift Parrot during autumn and winter, when the Swamp Mahogany trees are in flower.

Famous quotes containing the word environment:

If the Revolution has the right to destroy bridges and art monuments whenever necessary, it will stop still less from laying its hand on any tendency in art which, no matter how great its achievement in form, threatens to disintegrate the revolutionary environment or to arouse the internal forces of the Revolution, that is, the proletariat, the peasantry and the intelligentsia, to a hostile opposition to one another. Our standard is, clearly, political, imperative and intolerant.
    Leon Trotsky (1879–1940)

Autonomy means women defining themselves and the values by which they will live, and beginning to think of institutional arrangements which will order their environment in line with their needs.... Autonomy means moving out from a world in which one is born to marginality, to a past without meaning, and a future determined by others—into a world in which one acts and chooses, aware of a meaningful past and free to shape one’s future.
    Gerda Lerner (b. 1920)

For those parents from lower-class and minority communities ... [who] have had minimal experience in negotiating dominant, external institutions or have had negative and hostile contact with social service agencies, their initial approaches to the school are often overwhelming and difficult. Not only does the school feel like an alien environment with incomprehensible norms and structures, but the families often do not feel entitled to make demands or force disagreements.
    Sara Lawrence Lightfoot (20th century)
