Brillouin Scattering - Relationship To Rayleigh Scattering

Relationship To Rayleigh Scattering

Rayleigh scattering, too, can be considered to be due to fluctuation in the density, composition and orientation of molecules, and hence of refraction index, in small volumes of matter (particularly in gases or liquids). The difference is that Rayleigh scattering considers only random and incoherent thermal fluctuations, in contrast with the correlated, periodic fluctuations (phonons) of Brillouin scattering.

Famous quotes containing the words relationship and/or scattering:

It is possible to make friends with our children—but probably not while they are children.... Friendship is a relationship of mutual dependence-interdependence. A family is a relationship in which some of the participants are dependent on others. It is the job of parents to provide for their children. It is not appropriate for adults to enter into parenthood recognizing they have made a decision to accept dependents and then try to pretend that their children are not dependent on them.
    Donald C. Medeiros (20th century)

And Time, a maniac scattering dust,
And Life, a Fury slinging flame.
    Alfred Tennyson (1809–1892)
