Brigham Young, Jr. - President of The Quorum of The Twelve Apostles

President of The Quorum of The Twelve Apostles

Young was ordained an apostle before Joseph F. Smith but was not placed in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles until after Joseph F. Smith. However, It was not until 1900 that a clear decision was made giving Joseph F. Smith seniority in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, since he had been a member of the First Presidency since becoming an apostle. Young had served as the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since the previous president, Franklin D. Richards, had died on 9 December 1899. When church president Lorenzo Snow died on 10 October 1901, Joseph F. Smith served as president of the Quorum until he was made church president on 17 October 1901. When Smith became president, Young again assumed the position of president of the Quorum of the Twelve. Young is the only person to have served two non-consecutive terms as president of the Quorum.

Famous quotes containing the words president of the, twelve apostles, president of, president, twelve and/or apostles:

In a large university, there are as many deans and executive heads as there are schools and departments. Their relations to one another are intricate and periodic; in fact, “galaxy” is too loose a term: it is a planetarium of deans with the President of the University as a central sun. One can see eclipses, inner systems, and oppositions.
    Jacques Barzun (b. 1907)

Among twelve apostles there must always be one who is as hard as stone, so that the new church may be built upon him.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

We must choose. Be a child of the past with all its crudities and imperfections, its failures and defeats, or a child of the future, the future of symmetry and ultimate success.
Frances E. Willard 1839–1898, U.S. president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union 1879-1891, author, activist. The Woman’s Magazine, pp. 137-40 (January 1887)

I see the first lady as another means to keep a president from becoming isolated.
    Nancy Reagan (b. 1923)

But the twelve lie in the sand by the dry rock
Seeing nothing—the sand, the tree, rocks
Without number—and turn away the face
To the mind’s briefer and more desert place.
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

    ‘Tis probable Religion after this
Came next in order; which they could not miss.
How could the Dutch but be converted, when
The Apostles were so many fishermen?
Besides the waters of themselves did rise,
And, as their land, so them did re-baptize.
    Andrew Marvell (1621–1678)
