Branch Line - United Kingdom

United Kingdom

Many British branch lines were closed as a result of the "Beeching Axe" in the 1960s, although some have been re-opened as heritage railways.

The smallest branch line that is still in operation in the UK is the Stourbridge Town Branch Line from Stourbridge Junction going to Stourbridge Town. It has only one track. The journey is a third of a mile (about half of a kilometer) and the train takes around 55 seconds to complete its journey.

Famous quotes containing the words united and/or kingdom:

You may consider me presumptuous, gentlemen, but I claim to be a citizen of the United States, with all the qualifications of a voter. I can read the Constitution, I am possessed of two hundred and fifty dollars, and the last time I looked in the old family Bible I found I was over twenty-one years of age.
    Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1816–1902)

Rev. J.D. Liddell: The Kingdom of God is not a democracy. The Lord never seeks re- election. There’s no discussion. No deliberation. No referenda as to which road to take. There’s one right, one wrong. One absolute ruler.
    Sandy: A dictator, you mean.
Rev. J.D. Liddell: Aye, but a benign, loving dictator.
    Colin Welland (b. 1934)
