Boyne Valley (Queensland) - Future

Future

The United Kingdom's entry into the European Common Market in the 1970s saw the death of the dairy industry almost overnight. Irregular rainfall forced an end to dry land farming. The twenty-first century finds the land described by John Uniake gone. It's inundated by the Lake Awoonga constructed to meet Gladstone's growing water demands. The valley is slipping back to its pastoral beginnings. It looks to tourism as a focus for its next wave of development.

Famous quotes containing the word future:

We accept and welcome ... as conditions to which we must accommodate ourselves, great inequality of environment; the concentration of business, industrial and commercial, in the hands of a few; and the law of competition between these, as being not only beneficial, but essential for the future progress of the race.
    Andrew Carnegie (1835–1919)

One merit in Carlyle, let the subject be what it may, is the freedom of prospect he allows, the entire absence of cant and dogma. He removes many cartloads of rubbish, and leaves open a broad highway. His writings are all unfenced on the side of the future and the possible. Though he does but inadvertently direct our eyes to the open heavens, nevertheless he lets us wander broadly underneath, and shows them to us reflected in innumerable pools and lakes.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

I was so grateful to be independent of the academic establishment. I thought, how awful it would be to have my future hinge on such people and such decisions.
    Jane Jacobs (b. 1916)
