Bourse Du Travail - Role - Cultural

Cultural

The other major change of this period was the Republican promulgation of Laic laws, taking education out of the hands of the Catholic church, and eventually taxing and regulation Church institutions. Bourses du Travail, like civil marriage or lay funerals, filled a communal role once played by local parishes.

Bourses du Travail were centers of working class culture. Almost every one contained lending libraries, classrooms, meeting halls, and theaters. Family and community celebrations took place here (away from the church), as did classes and political discussions, formal meetings and light entertainment. The Bourses du Travail buildings are still often the place of theaters and concert venues.

Famous quotes containing the word cultural:

The personal appropriation of clichés is a condition for the spread of cultural tourism.
    Serge Daney (1944–1992)

The primary function of myth is to validate an existing social order. Myth enshrines conservative social values, raising tradition on a pedestal. It expresses and confirms, rather than explains or questions, the sources of cultural attitudes and values.... Because myth anchors the present in the past it is a sociological charter for a future society which is an exact replica of the present one.
    Ann Oakley (b. 1944)

The men who are messing up their lives, their families, and their world in their quest to feel man enough are not exercising true masculinity, but a grotesque exaggeration of what they think a man is. When we see men overdoing their masculinity, we can assume that they haven’t been raised by men, that they have taken cultural stereotypes literally, and that they are scared they aren’t being manly enough.
    Frank Pittman (20th century)
