Famous quotes containing the word painting:
“I never wanted to live an unembellished life, and I have never done it.... Living under such a compulsion has been like painting pictures of life, and I dont take kindly to suggestions that I might have been less egotistically employed had I become a trained nurse.”
—Margaret Anderson (18861973)
“His work was that curious mixture of bad painting and good intentions that always entitles a man to be called a representative British artist.”
—Oscar Wilde (18541900)
“If the man who paints only the tree, or flower, or other surface he sees before him were an artist, the king of artists would be the photographer. It is for the artist to do something beyond this: in portrait painting to put on canvas something more than the face the model wears for that one day; to paint the man, in short, as well as his features.”
—James Mcneill Whistler (18341903)
