Bob Quinn (Australian Footballer) - War Service

War Service

Quinn enlisted in the Australian Army in June 1940 as a Warrant Officer Class 2 (while still serving as Captain/Coach) and was shipped out to fight in the North African campaign. Showing the same fearlessness that he displayed in football, Warrant Officer Quinn was awarded the Military Medal for bravery at the Siege of Tobruk. During the war, which also included action in the Pacific, Quinn severely injured his knee, arm and face and it was feared that he may never play again.

Famous quotes containing the words war and/or service:

The contention that a standing army and navy is the best security of peace is about as logical as the claim that the most peaceful citizen is he who goes about heavily armed. The experience of every-day life fully proves that the armed individual is invariably anxious to try his strength. The same is historically true of governments. Really peaceful countries do not waste life and energy in war preparations, with the result that peace is maintained.
    Emma Goldman (1869–1940)

For those parents from lower-class and minority communities ... [who] have had minimal experience in negotiating dominant, external institutions or have had negative and hostile contact with social service agencies, their initial approaches to the school are often overwhelming and difficult. Not only does the school feel like an alien environment with incomprehensible norms and structures, but the families often do not feel entitled to make demands or force disagreements.
    Sara Lawrence Lightfoot (20th century)
