Bluffers - Conservation Status

Conservation Status

This species is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (v3.1, 2001). Species are listed as such due to their wide distribution, presumed large population, or because it is unlikely to be declining fast enough to qualify for listing in a more threatened category. The population trend is stable. Year assessed: 2007.

However, it is listed as endangered in the state of Iowa, and threatened in Illinois and South Dakota. It should also be noted that in a number of states where it is native, such as Illinois and Missouri, it is illegal to own or breed any of the three subspecies without a permit. It is more common in the southern end of its range, where it holds no particular conservation status.

Famous quotes containing the words conservation and/or status:

A country grows in history not only because of the heroism of its troops on the field of battle, it grows also when it turns to justice and to right for the conservation of its interests.
    Aristide Briand (1862–1932)

What is clear is that Christianity directed increased attention to childhood. For the first time in history it seemed important to decide what the moral status of children was. In the midst of this sometimes excessive concern, a new sympathy for children was promoted. Sometimes this meant criticizing adults. . . . So far as parents were put on the defensive in this way, the beginning of the Christian era marks a revolution in the child’s status.
    C. John Sommerville (20th century)
