Bloede's Dam - Design

Design

Victor Bloede hired electrical engineer Otto Wonder to oversee the development of this unique hydroelectric dam. The dam was 220 feet (67 m) long, 40 feet (12 m) wide at the base and had a drop of 26.5 feet (8.1 m). It was an Ambursen Hydraulic Construction Company (Boston type) reinforced concrete slab and buttress dam. It was the first known instance of a submerged hydroelectric plant where the power plant was actually housed under the spillway. It is also recognized as one of the earliest dams constructed of reinforced concrete. The dam was not only the first of its kind in design but in technology as well state of the art equipment by 1907 standards was housed within its core. The power generating plant was built with 34-inch Poole & Hunt Leffel Wheels and 30-inch Samson Turbines.

Famous quotes containing the word design:

For I choose that my remembrances of him should be pleasing, affecting, religious. I will love him as a glorified friend, after the free way of friendship, and not pay him a stiff sign of respect, as men do to those whom they fear. A passage read from his discourses, a moving provocation to works like his, any act or meeting which tends to awaken a pure thought, a flow of love, an original design of virtue, I call a worthy, a true commemoration.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

    Westerners inherit
    A design for living
    Deeper into matter—
    Not without due patter
    Of a great misgiving.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

What but design of darkness to appall?—
If design govern in a thing so small.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
