The Bishop of Madras was the Ordinary of the Anglican Church in Madras from its inception in 1835 until the foundation of the Church in India, Pakistan, Burma and Ceylon in 1927; and since then head of one of its most prominent Dioceses.
Famous quotes containing the words bishop of and/or bishop:
“Whether they knew or not,
Goldsmith and Burke, Swift and the Bishop of Cloyne
All hated Whiggery; but what is Whiggery?
A levelling, rancorous, rational sort of mind
That never looked out of the eye of a saint
Or out of drunkards eye.”
—William Butler Yeats (18651939)
“His beak is focussed; he is preoccupied,
looking for something, something, something.
Poor bird, he is obsessed!”
—Elizabeth Bishop (19111979)
