Speech and Debate

Speech and Debate at Bishop Grandin provide students an opportunity to develop and enhance their oratory abilities as well as their argumentation structure. The speech club, run by Ms. Linda Macgillivray, meets during lunch hour and after school for practice and competes against other schools in Calgary. There are many speech categories in which students can participate. The categories include original oratory, impromptu, monologue, duet acting, poetry, and prose. The highlights of the competition season are the regionals and provincial championships that occur in March. The debate team meets during lunch much like the speech team. The debate team is run by Mr. Frederick Audet. Similar to speech the culmination of the debate program occurs during the regional and provincial competitions in March.

Famous quotes containing the words speech and/or debate:

    His speech is a burning fire;
    With his lips he travaileth;
    In his heart is a blind desire,
    In his eyes foreknowledge of death:
    He weaves, and is clothed with derision;
    Sows, and he shall not reap;
    His life is a watch or a vision
    Between a sleep and a sleep.
    —A.C. (Algernon Charles)

    My first debate in high school—”Resolved: Girls are no good”—and I won!
