Bill Kernen - Coaching Career - Cal State Fullerton

Cal State Fullerton

Moving to Cal State Fullerton in 1978 to coach pitchers under renowned head coach Augie Garrido, Kernen helped to turn the Titans into a perennial postseason contender winning the Big West tournament an unprecedented 5 straight seasons, including trips to the College World Series in 1979 and 1982, with the Titans winning the national championship in the 1979 season. Kernen left the Titans after the 1982 season, only to return to the team for the 1987 season. After his coaching hiatus, he spent another six years at Fullerton, coaching 14 pitchers who were selected by Major League Baseball in the amateur draft, four of whom reached the big leagues in Gary Buckles, Larry Casian, Jeff Robinson, and No. 1 draft pick Mike Harkey.

Famous quotes containing the words state and/or fullerton:

Man made one grave mistake: in answer to vaguely reformist and humanitarian agitation he admitted women to politics and the professions. The conservatives who saw this as the undermining of our civilization and the end of the state and marriage were right after all; it is time for the demolition to begin.
    Germaine Greer (b. 1939)

... it is a great mistake to confuse conventionality with simplicity ... it takes a good deal of intelligence and a great many inhibitions to follow a social code.
    —Katharine Fullerton Gerould (1879–1944)
