Bike Registry - Purpose

Purpose

Bike registration is intended to provide:

  1. An element of security (such as at schools and universities)
  2. A means of theft deterrence and a method of recovery in the event of theft

Bikes are stolen in large numbers in many parts of the world.

  • In Copenhagen approximately 20,000 annually.
  • In the USA an average of 230,000 annually, according to the FBI.
  • In UK, the Home Office reports an average 400,000.

Globally the number is estimated at 1.5 million bikes reported stolen annually; perhaps another 2 to 3 million go unreported annually.

Famous quotes containing the word purpose:

Art for art’s sake, with no purpose, for any purpose perverts art. But art achieves a purpose which is not its own.
    Benjamin Constant (1767–1834)

To me the sole hope of human salvation lies in teaching Man to regard himself as an experiment in the realization of God, to regard his hands as God’s hand, his brain as God’s brain, his purpose as God’s purpose. He must regard God as a helpless Longing, which longed him into existence by its desperate need for an executive organ.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

...Often the accurate answer to a usage question begins, “It depends.” And what it depends on most often is where you are, who you are, who your listeners or readers are, and what your purpose in speaking or writing is.
    Kenneth G. Wilson (b. 1923)
