Big Rocky Fork Covered Bridge

The Big Rocky Fork Covered Bridge is 1 mile (1.6 km) southeast of Mansfield, Indiana on County Road 720 and about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of State Road 59. It is located in Parke County, Indiana. The length is 88 feet (27 m) including the 8-foot (2.4 m) overhang at each end. This single span Burr Arch Truss structure was built in 1900 by J. J. Daniels. The road bypassed this structure in 1988. Though no historical marker is in place, the Big Rocky Fork Covered Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The area around this bridge was known to be a favorite hideout for the infamous John Dillinger.

Famous quotes containing the words big, rocky, fork, covered and/or bridge:

As a remedy to life in society I would suggest the big city. Nowadays, it is the only desert within our means.
    Albert Camus (1913–1960)

Who will join in the march to the Rocky Mountains with me, a sort of high-pressure-double-cylinder-go-it-ahead-forty-wildcats- tearin’ sort of a feller?... Git out of this warming-pan, ye holly-hocks, and go out to the West where you may be seen.
—Administration in the State of Miss, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

Wherever a man separates from the multitude, and goes his own way in this mood, there indeed is a fork in the road, though ordinary travelers may see only a gap in the paling. His solitary path across lots will turn out the higher way of the two.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

My safe, safe psychosis is broken.
    It was hard.
    It was made of stone.
It covered my face like a mask.
    But it has cracked.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)

    I see four nuns
who sit like a bridge club,
    their faces poked out
    from under their habits,
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
