Big East Conference Football Awards

The Big East Conference gives five football awards at the conclusion of every season. The awards were first given in 1991 following the conference's first football season. The five awards include Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Special Teams Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year. Recipients are selected by the votes of the conference's eight head coaches.

Award recipients having included Heisman Trophy winners, NFL first-round draft picks, and NFL All-Star selections. The Miami Hurricanes have been the most successful team through the school's tenure with the conference from 1991 to 2004, winning six awards for offensive players, seven for defense, four for special teams, three for Rookie of the Year, and six for Coach of the Year. Every current and past conference member has received at least two awards.

Donovan McNabb of Syracuse is the only player to win more than two awards; he was named Rookie of the Year in 1995 and Offensive Player of the Year in 1996, 1997, and 1998. Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech, Dennis Erickson of Miami, and Brian Kelly of Cincinnati were each Coach of the Year three times.

Famous quotes containing the words big, east, conference and/or football:

Nothing is far and nothing is near, if one desires. The world is little, people are little, human life is little. There is only one big thing—desire.
    Willa Cather (1873–1947)

Though all the East did quake to hear
    Of Alexander’s dreadful name,
And all the West likewise did fear
To hear of Julius Caesar’s fame,
    Robert Southwell (1561?–1595)

Politics is still the man’s game. The women are allowed to do the chores, the dirty work, and now and then—but only occasionally—one is present at some secret conference or other. But it’s not the rule. They can go out and get the vote, if they can and will; they can collect money, they can be grateful for being permitted to work. But that is all.
    Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876–1958)

In this dream that dogs me I am part
Of a silent crowd walking under a wall,
Leaving a football match, perhaps, or a pit,
    All moving the same way.
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)
