Big Brother 1 (UK) - Summary

Summary

On Day 1, the ten original housemates - Andrew, Anna, Caroline, Craig, Darren, Melanie, Nichola, Nicholas, Sada and Tom - entered the Big Brother House. On Day 2, the housemates were given their first weekly task. They were required to make a clay bowl and mug each using a potter's wheel. If more than three objects cracked when cooked, the housemates would fail the task; the results were announced on Day 7. On Day 3, several housemates rubbed clay on their bodies and made body art on the walls of the house. On Day 6, housemates lied and told Darren, who had a phobia of chickens, that Big Brother had given him the task of cleaning out the chicken coop. Before he completed the task, however, Big Brother informed him that this was not a true task. On Day 7, the housemates learned they had failed the first weekly task. Due to their failure, the housemates only had £84 to spend on groceries the following week. During the first week, a gender divide was seen throughout the house, in which the boys and the girls clashed. Housemate Sada stated she believed it was due to "sexual tension", while a team of psychiatrists claimed it was due to the maturity difference in the genders.

On Day 8, housemates were given a canopy to place outside, providing protection from the sun. They were told that if they attempted to use the canopy to see over the walls of the house, their shopping budget would be reduced. On Day 9, housemates learned about their second weekly task. The housemates were provided with 10 questions about one another, and each housemate would have to answer the question later in the week. They must memorize their housemates' answers, as they will be answering them later in the week. If the housemates as a group miss more than one question, their shopping budget will be decreased. On Day 11, Andrew celebrated his birthday in the house. Later that day, housemates completed the first nominations. Caroline and Sada were nominated for eviction, with Sada receiving six votes and Caroline receiving five. The gender division was obvious during the voting, with all of the men voting for Sada and Caroline, and the majority of the women choosing Darren and Andrew. Shortly following the announcement of the nominations, Sada debated walking from the House, and revealed her idea to the other housemates, who wanted her to stay. The group later learned that if Sada chose to leave the game, the person with the next highest amount of votes, Andrew, would be nominated in her place. Ultimately, Sada chose not to walk. Later that night, Andrew was allowed to pick one game to keep in the House for the duration of the show, as it was his birthday. On Day 13, the housemates passed the weekly task, as Craig was the only housemate to get a question wrong. On Day 15, Sada became the first evicted housemate, with a 55% vote against her.

On Day 16, the housemates were given their third weekly task. Housemates were given an exercise bike, and had to travel from Land's End to John O'Groats on the bike, in a total of three days. They had to pass all of their hometowns in this amount of time. This means they had to travel a total of 1,800 km. They chose to wager half of their weekly budget on the task. Later that day, Craig had to see a doctor over a knee injury he had sustained previously that week. He was adviced to rest his knee for the day, and he learned he could compete in the weekly task tomorrow. Since this caused the weekly task to start late, the group was credited 300 of their 1,800 km by Big Brother. On Day 18, the housemates participated in the second nominations of the season. Andrew and Caroline were the two nominees for the week, with Andrew receiving four votes and Caroline receiving five. This made Caroline's second consecutive week being nominated. Following this set of nominations, Nick and Anna were the only two housemates to not have a nomination vote cast against them. Unlike the previous week, the results of the nomination were not revealed to the housemates until the following day. On Day 19, the group completed their weekly task, earning the addition to their budget. Later that day, they learned that they would be given a mini-task, as they completed their initial task quickly. They had to write and perform a play, and all nine housemates were required to participate. For doing the task, they were allowed to watch any film of their choice; they chose to watch Happy Gilmore. On Day 22, Andrew was evicted from the House, receiving 68% of the public vote to be evicted.

On Day 23, the housemates were given their fourth weekly task. The eight remaining housemates were required to learn the Semaphore signalling system, and were separated into four pairs. They had four days to learn how to communicate and transcribe a message in Semaphore with their partner, and they were not allowed to make mistakes. Big Brother gave each pair a message to communicate to one another. The group chose to wager 35% of their food budget on the task. The randomly selected pairs were Caroline and Craig, Nichola and Nicholas, Thomas and Melanie, and Anna and Darren. On Day 24, a group of viewers sent a model helicopter over the Big Brother House and dropped leaflets asking for Nick to be the next person nominated for eviction. Big Brother requested for all housemates to enter the girls' bedroom, while security discarded of the documents. None of the housemates saw or heard about the papers until the season was over. Later that day, Anna revealed in the Diary Room that she was debating walking from the show. After revealing her thoughts to the others, however, they convinced her to stay. On Day 25, the housemates made their nominations for the third week. The two people nominated for eviction that week were Thomas and Caroline, receiving four nomination votes each. This made Caroline's third consecutive time being nominated for eviction, while it was Tom's first. Anna and Nick still had no nominations cast against them following this set of nominations. Like the previous week, the nominees were not revealed to the housemates until the following day. On Day 26, the housemates missed the opening of the storage room, meaning they could not get food. Big Brother later supplied them with a second task, in which each housemate had to perform a good deed. They completed the task, and earned the food for the week. On Day 27, the housemates learned that they had failed the Semaphore signal task. On Day 29, Caroline was evicted, receiving 62% of the public vote.

On Day 30, Nichola celebrated her birthday in the house. She chose to have an orange theme, and the housemates were given material to make their own costumes. On Day 30, the housemates found an assault course set up in the backyard. They had to practice the course throughout the week, and complete it in an 8 minute time limit at a later date. They chose to wager 50% of their budget on the task. On Day 31, the housemates had to write poems about one another, and then guess who wrote which poem as well as whom they wrote about. On Day 32, housemates made the fourth nominations of the season. Nichola and Craig received four votes each, and were nominated for eviction that week. Following the nominations, Nick was the only remaining housemate to not receive a nomination vote against him. On Day 34, the housemates competed in the assault course task. The housemates as a whole finished in five minutes and forty-eight seconds, earning the increase in their weekly budget. Later that day, housemates were given the task of writing a song, with lyrics, and would perform it in 24 hours. On Day 35, housemate Nick was ejected from the game after he was discovered to have been writing down the names of the housemates he wanted nominated, and informing certain people in the house of his plans. The ejection came after Nick was scolded numerous times by Big Brother for discussing nominations, as well as after Big Brother had to search his belongings after outside news sources claimed he had smuggled in a mobile phone. Despite Nick's ejection from the game, Nichola and Craig learned the eviction process would continue as normal. On Day 36, Nichola was evicted, receiving 72% of the public vote.

On Day 37, new housemate Claire entered the house as a replacement for Nick. As it was her first week in the house, Claire was exempt from being nominated by her fellow housemates. In turn, however, she was ineligible from making her own nominations that week. As she had not been sequestered before the show, Claire was well aware of the events that had happened in the game, but was not allowed to share the public opinion, or anything occurring outside of the game, to her fellow housemates. This rule was held to the point that she claimed she wasn't even aware of why Nick left, so the housemates were not aware how closely the series was being followed. Later that day, they were given their sixth weekly task. The five original housemates, plus new arrival Claire, would have one minute after hearing an alarm to go outside and find a face of one of the ten original housemates, or Claire. At a later date, they would have to tell Big Brother the sequence in which the faces popped up. In total, there would be 100 faces pop up throughout the next few days. They wagered 50% of their weekly budget on the task. On Day 39, housemates participated in the fourth nominations. In a Big Brother first, there was a tie in the voting, in which Craig, Anna and Tom had two nomination votes, and Darren had three. Melanie had only one nominations, and Claire was exempt from both being nominated and making nominations. Due to the tie, all four of the housemates were nominated for eviction. On Day 40, housemates were sequestered in the womens' bedroom while a vet came to check on the chickens, which had been ill for the past week. The vet also returned two chickens who had been under observation. On Day 41, the housemates completed the task and passed, earning the increase in their weekly budget. Later that day, they were given a mini-task of making outfits for their fellow housemates. On Day 43, Tom was evicted from the house, receiving 30% of the public vote. Darren narrowly survived eviction, receiving 29% of the vote. Anna had 22% of the vote, and Craig had 19%.

On Day 44, housemates were given their weekly task. They had to make a life-sized sculpture of themselves, made of wiring. A housemates sculpture is required to stand on its own, without assistance, for one consecutive minute. If it does not meet the requirements, the housemates fail the task. They had to present the sculptures at a later date. Later that day, housemates were given three different samples of wine. If they could figure out which one was the most expensive, they would be given five bottles of the wine; they earned the wine. On Day 46, housemates participated in their sixth round of nominations. Initially, Clair, Craig, Darren and Melanie were nominated for eviction, with Craig receiving three nomination votes and Claire, Darren and Melanie receiving two nomination votes each. A technical issue, however, caused the house to overhear Darren's nominations, and Big Brother asked each housemate to redo their nominations, providing them the opportunity to change their decision. Everyone left their nominations the same except for Darren, who nominated Claire instead of Melanie. This changed the outcome of the nominations, and meant that only Claire and Craig were nominated for eviction that week. On Day 48, the housemates failed their weekly task, as only Melanie's model followed the guidelines properly. On Day 50, Claire was evicted over Craig, receiving 79% of the public vote. Claire spent the least amount of time in the house this season, only thirteen days, and had the highest voting percentage against her this season.

On Day 51, housemates were given their eighth weekly task. Housemates were required to learn and perform various circus skills, which included juggling, tightrope, walking, and learning how to ride a unicycle. All of the housemates were required to participate, and would perform the three activities at a later date in the house. They bet 20% of their budget on the task. On Day 53, housemates did their seventh and final set of nominations. Melanie, Craig and Darren were nominated for eviction, with Darren receiving three nominations, and Melanie and Craig receiving two nominations. Anna only received one nomination, therefore was safe from eviction for the week. On Day 55, housemates failed the "Big Brother Circus" task. They were later given a second task, in which they had to impersonate one of their fellow housemates. This includes dressing, speaking and acting like the selected housemate. Each housemate randomly drew names to decide which housemate they were to imitate. Later that day, they were given a new task, in which they had to create a 4 page newspaper and fill it with events they believe had happened outside of the house. If they were to succeed in the task, they would earn a takeaway meal; they passed the task. On Day 57, Melanie was evicted from the house, receiving 69% of the public vote.

On Day 59, housemates were given a three part task for the week. The task would have one winner, who would win a party with the theme of their choice. The tasks first step involved learning about the highway code, while the second tested the housemates' physical ability. The last part of the task required housemates to take care of an artificial baby for an amount of time in the house. Anna was the eventual winner of the task, with a 92% accuracy. Craig came in second with 82% and Darren came in last with 76%. On Day 64, during the live season finale, it was announced that Darren had been evicted, coming in third place, receiving 13% of the vote to win. It was later announced that Anna had come in second, receiving 49% of the public vote to win. This made Craig the winner of Big Brother 1, with 51% of the public voting for him to win. He won the £70,000 prize.

Famous quotes containing the word summary:

I have simplified my politics into an utter detestation of all existing governments; and, as it is the shortest and most agreeable and summary feeling imaginable, the first moment of an universal republic would convert me into an advocate for single and uncontradicted despotism. The fact is, riches are power, and poverty is slavery all over the earth, and one sort of establishment is no better, nor worse, for a people than another.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)

Product of a myriad various minds and contending tongues, compact of obscure and minute association, a language has its own abundant and often recondite laws, in the habitual and summary recognition of which scholarship consists.
    Walter Pater (1839–1894)
