Better World Books - History

History

In May 2002, three University of Notre Dame graduates led a book drive to help the Robinson Community Learning Center in South Bend, Indiana, USA. The founders won the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business top prize for social entrepreneurship - the McCloskey Social Venture Business Plan competition. They used the momentum to expand book drives beyond the Midwest. As of January 2001, the Campus Division of Better World Books works with students and bookstore managers to lead book drives at over 1800 college and university campuses across North America; the Library Division works with over 2000 libraries, collecting discards and unwanted donations.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of the world is none other than the progress of the consciousness of freedom.
    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)

Throughout the history of commercial life nobody has ever quite liked the commission man. His function is too vague, his presence always seems one too many, his profit looks too easy, and even when you admit that he has a necessary function, you feel that this function is, as it were, a personification of something that in an ethical society would not need to exist. If people could deal with one another honestly, they would not need agents.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)

No one is ahead of his time, it is only that the particular variety of creating his time is the one that his contemporaries who are also creating their own time refuse to accept.... For a very long time everybody refuses and then almost without a pause almost everybody accepts. In the history of the refused in the arts and literature the rapidity of the change is always startling.
    Gertrude Stein (1874–1946)
