Sporting

A product of Portuguese League powerhouse Sporting Clube de Portugal, Lisbon-born Beto established himself in the first team in the 1996–97 season, at the age of just 20, after two loans. As a defensive force and team captain, he scored some important goals, namely against F.C. Porto, but also two own goals in a single match against rivals S.L. Benfica.

He won the national league twice, in 1999–2000 and 2001–02, conquering the double in the latter year. During his 10-year spell with the Lions, he managed to net at least one goal in every season.

Famous quotes containing the word sporting:

I once heard of a murderer who propped his two victims up against a chess board in sporting attitudes and was able to get as far as Seattle before his crime was discovered.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)

The Boston papers had never told me that there were seals in the harbor. I had always associated these with the Esquimaux and other outlandish people. Yet from the parlor windows all along the coast you may see families of them sporting on the flats. They were as strange to me as the merman would be. Ladies who never walk in the woods, sail over the sea. To go to sea! Why, it is to have the experience of Noah,—to realize the deluge. Every vessel is an ark.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
