Bertie Bassett

Bertie Bassett is a mascot for the Bassett's brand of Liquorice allsorts. He is a man made oftric liquorice, his bodyparts all being Allsorts in various colours. Bertie, a jovial, smiling character in a tophat, is somewhat similar to characters created by both Lurpak (for its butter) and Pillsbury (which has used a 'Dough Boy') in that he is made out of an edible product as an anthroporphic spokesman used to market it to consumers.

The Ghostbusters character, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man (a sailor-esque character made of marshmallow) and especially the Doctor Who character The Kandyman (not jovial but a deadly villain, made of various sweets) are similar concepts from the worlds of fiction.

Bertie Bassett is a very famous figure in the UK, his image being used on the brand of products, TV commercials and on vending machines etc..Its origins lie with the advertising copywriters of the 1930s when Frank Regan,a young advertising copywriter,in London, sat down with the product and his pipe-cleaners. He constructed an original version of Bertie from the Liquorice Allsorts and pipe cleaners.
