Ben Cheese

Ben Cheese (1955 – 21 January 2001) was the engineer who got Sinclair's ZX Microdrives to work. Authors Ian Adamson and Richard Kennedy, in their book Sinclair and the "Sunrise" Technology, writes that "it seems only fair to note that it was the tenacity and imagination of R&D staffer Ben Cheese that got the product to the market".

When Sinclair sold up, Cheese formed a company called Flare Technology with two other ex-Sinclair engineers, John Mathieson and Martin Brennan. Brennan and Mathieson went on to form Flare II, and to develop the Atari Jaguar console. Meanwhile, Cheese worked with Argonaut Software and Nintendo to develop the Super FX chip used in SNES games such as Star Fox.

Besides his engineering work, Ben Cheese also drew some mildly subversive cartoons for the Sinclair in-house newsletter ("WHAM!", or "What's Happening At Milton").

Famous quotes containing the words ben and/or cheese:

Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me. Aren’t you?
Calder Willingham, screenwriter, Buck Henry, screenwriter, and Mike Nichols. Ben Braddock (Dustin Hoffman)

I may be able to spot arrowheads on the desert but a refrigerator is a jungle in which I am easily lost. My wife, however, will unerringly point out that the cheese or the leftover roast is hiding right in front of my eyes. Hundreds of such experiences convince me that men and women often inhabit quite different visual worlds. These are differences which cannot be attributed to variations in visual acuity. Man and women simply have learned to use their eyes in very different ways.
    Edward T. Hall (b. 1914)
