History
Bellevue Community College was established in 1966 as an alternative place of higher education for residents of the east side of Lake Washington. The School opened with a total of 464 students in portable classrooms on the campus of Newport High School. Two years later, construction began on a permanent campus, and school size grew throughout the 1970s. During the 1980s, slow growth led to a reduction in staff and enrollment. College growth once again increased during the 1990s, and peaked with a total enrollment of 39,300 during the 2000-2001 school year.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Only the history of free peoples is worth our attention; the history of men under a despotism is merely a collection of anecdotes.”
—Sébastien-Roch Nicolas De Chamfort (17411794)
“There is nothing truer than myth: history, in its attempt to realize myth, distorts it, stops halfway; when history claims to have succeeded this is nothing but humbug and mystification. Everything we dream is realizable. Reality does not have to be: it is simply what it is.”
—Eugène Ionesco (b. 1912)
