Belgians - Religion

Religion

Roman Catholicism has traditionally been Belgium's majority religion with approximately 75% of the Belgians declaring themselves to be Catholics. However, by 2004, nationwide Sunday church attendance was only about 4 to 8% (9% for Flanders only). A 2006 inquiry in Flanders, long considered more religious than the Brussels or Wallonia regions in Belgium, showed 55% of its inhabitants calling themselves religious while 36% said that they believed that God created the world.

Famous quotes containing the word religion:

Magic is the envelopment and coercion of the objective world by the ego; it is a dynamic subjectivism. Religion is the coercion of the ego by gods and spirits who are objectively conceived beings in control of nature and man.
    Richard Chase (b. 1914)

When Religion and Royalty are swept away, the people will attack the great, and after the great, they will fall upon the rich.
    HonorĂ© De Balzac (1799–1850)

In the latter part of the seventeenth century, according to the historian of Dunstable, “Towns were directed to erect ‘a cage’ near the meeting-house, and in this all offenders against the sanctity of the Sabbath were confined.” Society has relaxed a little from its strictness, one would say, but I presume that there is not less religion than formerly. If the ligature is found to be loosened in one part, it is only drawn the tighter in another.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
