Bed rest is a medical treatment involving a period of consistent (day and night) recumbence in bed. It is used as a treatment for an illness or medical condition. Bed rest is especially used when prescribed or chosen. Bed rest is not especially used for severe prostration or imminent death. Even though most patients in hospitals spend most of their time in the hospital beds, bed rest more often refers to an extended period of recumbence at home. Some clinicians now regard bed rest as being at best neutral to outcome, and in some cases potentially harmful to patients.

Famous quotes containing the words bed and/or rest:
“After I went to bed I had a curious fancy as to dreams. In sleep the doors of the mind are shut, and thoughts come jumping in at the windows. They tumble headlong, and therefore are so disorderly and strange. Sometimes they are stout and light on their feet, and then they are rational dreams.”
—James Boswell (17401795)
“My lovemy faithshould instil into your bosom a praeternatural calm. You would rest from care.... You would get better.... And if not, Helen,... if you diedthen at least would I clasp your dear hand in death, and willinglyoh, joyfully ... go down with you into the night of the Grave.”
—Edgar Allan Poe (18091849)
