Landmarks
Calder Abbey, which lies by the river Calder just north of Calder Bridge, is a picturesque ruin adjoining Calder Abbey House, a largely 19th century house which incorporates some remains of the abbey. To the south of Calder Bridge, also close to the river, is Sella Park, a 17th century house incorporating a 14th century pele tower, restored in the 19th century and now a country house hotel.

“The lives of happy people are dense with their own doingscrowded, active, thick.... But the sorrowing are nomads, on a plain with few landmarks and no boundaries; sorrows horizons are vague and its demands are few.”
—Larry McMurtry (b. 1936)
“Of all the bewildering things about a new country, the absence of human landmarks is one of the most depressing and disheartening.”
—Willa Cather (18731947)
